The Colony- Movie Review and The story

Before i gist the story , i would say it is NOT a bad movie. Well , its not excellent either. It resembles some old movies like 30 days of night and so on. The film revolves around hope for survival. The earth has suffered ice age , when it started snowing and never stopped. Humans who survived built colonies underneath the surface where they have certain "rules" and store grains ,meat and poultry. Eventually colonies ran out of meds for even normal flu or cold . So these "rules" were made by the leaders of the colonies that if one gets a cold , they need to be quarantined which was actually no good but just locking people behind doors. They ultimately got worse and were brought out into the snow and shot dead. They had a chance to walk the snow but seldom they were given this chance . Anyhow , coming back to the story line, the colonies near to each other were in touch with one another via radio transmission signals , sorta like walkie talkies. Oh another point , humans have by then built certain weather changing machines, most of which were not working.

One day one colony gets an SOS from another, and then there were no more answers when they tried to get back in touch with the distressed colony . 3 people start out on a journey to see what happened. When they reach the colony they discover 2 things . Firstly they found a man locked behind the closed doors without food or water , somehow alive and scared to death. They gave him water , some nuts or something, and he showed them he caught a signal from few miles away where someone reported that one weather changing machine worked and there was about 8 miles of clear sky ,sun and the soil was free from ice. The one thing it didnt have was "seeds"  . If they could have seeds then they could grow them and hopes could relieve again. Then the man reports they sent a team out there to find the location but in the way they were attacked by "them" who followed the team back to the colony. They killed everyone.

As these 3 men try to take the man out and move back , this man closes the door behind them and locks himself back again.These 3 men hear certain sounds , follow them and come to see that in another area of the colony , a group of humans (men and women included ) were cutting and chopping down the colony members and eating their flesh.Then there is a fight, one young boy among the 3 men , get's killed. Two make their way out. These follow them up to a bridge and the eldest person in the group dies trying to sever the link of the bridge so that these people cannot follow them up to the surviving colony.

One gets back, who is apparently locked up by the other leader , saying he has set some new "rules" whilst they were gone . There is this boy who is a pickpocket , and very good in stealing objects out of people's pockets . He is first seen stealing a lighter and this time he steals the keys and frees the hero. (this was very impressive to watch  :-D ) Alright coming back to the story, this guy had already warned them , but no one listened . After he is freed , he and his girlfriend , finds out the location by a satellite map if there really was a clear sky out there.And bingo , they could find it .

He filled bags with seeds and grains and tried to run, but it was too late , those group of cannibals had already found their colony by another route. These were actually people who have become cannibals over time, their teeth had become sharp and they don't really speak much. So it wasn't out of hunger for food for one day. Probably some colonies had become cannibals over a generation or so following in controllable hunger and supplies running out with time..

Then there is another fight , lots of gun shots , finally a few manage to come out of a tunnel and the colony is put to fire by the other leader. He blows up a gas cylinder. However the cannibal leader finds his way up to the tunnel and there is a fight between him and the hero of the story. He ultimately chops his head down (eeww ) . Finally he comes out with seeds and some more grains . All of them start to walk again and to find the clear sky which they had traced quite a few miles away. The story ends..

Over all ,THE COLONY doesn't have an exceptional story line. Quite predictable story line and quite similar to a few other movies. But it's not a bad movie.

I would rate it 3/5 . It is kind of incomplete because whether they ultimately find out the place they traced or not, they survive, or die in the snow, what next happens to the surviving people of human race, these questions remain unanswered. The film contains disturbing scenes all those chopping and cutting down. :-P

Still u can watch because as i already mentioned , it is not a BAD movie. It is GOOD. not excellent.

Have a look at the trailer. And i loved the line " ur gonna need every bullet of that"  whoa .. the situation and the dialogue .. was really in tune ! :-D  May be it's all about the direction and the acting which makes this movie stand out.......   -Zinnia  :)
